Have you introduced your kids to that magic world of comic books? You should! Here are three reasons why the popularity of graphic novels and comic books is on the rise with educators:
1. Comic books improve vocabulary.
Research shows that reading comic books is just as good -- if not better -- for children's learning as reading "real" books. Researchers from California State University found comics use language that is more advanced than children's literature, which improves a child's vocabulary.
2. Comic books can encourage reluctant readers.
Kids who otherwise don't "like" to read often enjoy looking at comic books and graphic novels. They can be an especially great choice for children with learning disabilities. Kyle Redford, an editor at Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity, says that graphic novels can help dyslexic readers strengthen their vocabulary, build their reading confidence, and foster a love of story.
3. Comic books inspire creativity.
Create your own comic books or strips with your kids! One of the great things about comics is that the artwork isn't perfect. It can be silly. It can be childish. It can be outrageous. In other words, creating your own comics can be a great way to nurture creativity and imagination -- all while encouraging your kids to write in story form.
