Unexcused Absence ~ Memories of a Seahawk Superbowl Celebration

Play a little Hookey with a Mac Kid blessing from Cara's Corner!

By Cara Saxwold 2020 February 20, 2020

On this day six years ago, we were preparing to welcome home our Super Bowl Champions, the Seattle Seahawks! In what was to be an epic and unprecedented victory parade, we grappled as parents with the kids skipping school.   The more we thought about it, the more realized that there was no where else more important we should be that day, than in downtown Seattle. To this day we stand by that decision and in looking back, these universal words ring ever true to this day:

To whom it may concern,
With absolutely no disrespect to our children’s education or their teachers, the Saxwold children will be playing hooky tomorrow to attend the Seahawks welcome home parade & rally. Tomorrow we will assume the role of teacher to our kids in the school of life. We will learn what it means to be part of something far greater than ourselves and in turn, know what it means to be connected to a community of people. We will be part of history in the making and create memories to last a lifetime. We will witness first hand what it looks like when a team of people work together towards a common goal and more importantly, we will see a modern day version of what the Seahawks even call a “family” which has members of every shape, size, color, race and creed. When seeing the team and the trophy, with goose bumps, we will be teaching them PRIDE, a concept not easy for a Kindergartner and 1st grader to necessarily understand. We will learn the power of perseverance and hard work with the knowledge this has been years in the making and that goals often aren’t achieved overnight. We will have fun… an often overlooked but incredibly crucial aspect of life.
Obviously, we will also not be ashamed or come up with false excuses for our self-imposed day off resulting in an “unexcused absence”; teaching also that honesty is always the best policy. So many powerful life lessons will be wrapped up in tomorrow… tied up in a glorious sea of green & blue! GO HAWKS!!!
Thank you!

I hope one day to be able to regurgitate this exact same excusal note (for now the pleasure belongs to the Kansas City Chiefs). It occurred to me today however, that the content is universal.  As such, I’ve taken the liberty to create a template for you as well. Just fill in the blanks and go create some family memories of your own that you won’t regret!
