Celebrate Pride Month with your family - Resources and Local Events!

By Mary Englin, Publisher June 18, 2020

๐ŸŒˆJune is Pride Month! ๐ŸŒˆ

Here's a little history according to the Library of Congress:

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

In 1994, a coalition of education-based organizations in the United States designated October as LGBT History Month. In 1995, a resolution passed by the General Assembly of the National Education Association included LGBT History Month within a list of commemorative months. National Coming Out Day (October 11), as well as the first "March on Washington" in 1979, are commemorated in the LGBTQ community during LGBT History Month.

Local Pride Celebrations (note many have been postponed due to Covid-19)

Burien Pride (Facebook Page) - An update regarding Burien PRIDE 2020: We wanted to take a moment to update the community on the status of our fourth annual Burien Pride, which was originally scheduled for June 5-7, 2020. To date, everything event-wise has either been postponed or canceled as a result of Gov. Jay Inslee's Stay at Home order concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our hope is to conduct a Burien Winter Pride later this year where we can celebrate together and not just behind computer screens. It simply would not be responsible to gather at this time when COVID-19 has rendered King County still in Phase 1. As soon as it is safe to congregate, we will be rescheduling Burien Pride - and you will be one of the first to know!

In the meantime, there are some things we can do together to celebrate right now, including:

+ Pride flags along SW 152nd Street (look for them this weekend)!

+ Drive-in movie theater weekend (as soon as we can get to Level 2 recovery)

+ Share your stories of Pride with us on social media @BurienPride using hashtags #BurienPride #Pride2020 #VirtualPride #RainbowPride

White Center Pride - COVID-19 UPDATE: Due to Covid-19, the Pride festival originally scheduled for June 3-7, 2020 has been been postponed until October 7-11th, 2020. Safety is top priority so events will be modified as needed to ensure a safe event for all.

Alki Beach Pride - We are excited to announce that we are collaborating with Pacific Northwest Black Pride this year!
We will be hosting our 6th annual Alki Beach Pride on August 23rd 2020, as the Sunday event to cap off a weekend full of celebrating our diverse LGBTQIA+ community.  Mark your calendars and plan your vacations around August 20-23rd because you will not want to miss out!
This will be an all ages event. We will have food trucks to grab your fav beach snacks, your favorite musicians and performers and more! So stay tuned as we add our line up of events and get excited to gather and celebrate on another in a safe space.
