We are Mode Music and Performing Arts (MMPA), a nonprofit arts education organization specializing in Dance, Music, Theatre and Art enrichment and camps. 

Our goal is to provide instruction to all families in the Seattle and surrounding areas in schools and in our space in West Seattle by offering partial and full scholarships for students and schools in need.


THEATRE

INTRO TO COMEDY (K-2) 

Everybody loves to laugh! In this class, the students will explore their own sense of humor through improv games, story creation and character building. In each class, we will work on the fundamentals of improvisational comedy and how students can use their imaginations to create characters and relationships right on the spot. This course also emphasizes the importance of listening and team building. It’s taught by Tim Murray, a professional stand-up comedian and UCB improviser. Knock, knock… who’s there? COMEDY 101 (3-5) 

In this class, the students will learn the fundamentals of comedy through games! Throughout the course they will find out all they need to know about improvisational comedy and how to tell jokes. Whether they are playing the Dr. Know It All game, where they have to learn to speak confidently even when they have very little knowledge on the topic, or the party game, where they have to commit to a unique character, they will learn the basics of improv in a fun and hilarious way! Improv is a fantastic way for children to learn about teamwork and discover their own specific sense of humor. It’s a favorite to teach and the kids always request to have more improv in their everyday life. Taught by Tim Murray

INTRO TO THEATRE (K-3)

Picture this - the lights go down, the curtain goes up and the story begins. But how does it all work?? Let’s explore the magical world of theater! In this class we will learn through games, storytelling, visual art, dance, and song all about life in theater. Every class will prompt a fun theater activity at home, including play creation, acting games, making props and creating characters. Taught by John Scott

HARRY POTTER SCENE STUDY (2-5)

Take a trip to Hogwarts in this awesome scene study class! We will use a selection of scenes from the Harry Potter films and books to learn the fundamentals of character development and how to bring a script to life onstage or on the screen. Using fun and creative improv games and acting exercises, students will learn acting techniques and build confidence while becoming their favorite characters from this beloved series. Every class will prompt a 15-30 min activity for character building, prop and costume design, and practicing lines. Taught by Jessie Selleck

MUSICAL THEATRE REVUE (2-5)

All of your favorite musicals in one session! In this enrichment course, students will learn to use their bodies and voices to bring musical theater classics and new Broadway favorites to life. We will learn the basics of scene study and character development for young actors, as well as vocal performance and dance for the stage. Our teaching artists will choose several scenes and songs from shows the kids will love like Annie, Hamilton, The Lion King, and The Sound of Music. This class teaches teamwork, creativity, improvisation, and practical skills for combating stage fright and becoming a confident performer. Every class will prompt a 15-30 min activity for character building, prop and costume design, practicing lines, choreography and singing along. Taught by John Scott

DANCE

INTRO TO BALLET (2-5)

Exploring and learning about the fundamental movements and movement patterns that are the building blocks of ballet. We'll introduce the numbered positions that we always start and end phrases with. Explore pliés, tendus, piqués, passés, battements and more. We'll see how high we can jump from different positions, learn to gallop/chassé, skip backwards, and more. Also, spinning and learning to spot, and a stretching section. Taught by Erin Crall

INTRO TO CHOREOGRAPHY (K-3)

Making a dance: Anyone can make a dance. In this class, we'll talk about the different tools we can use to tell our story well. We'll talk about the use of levels, spacial patterns, music, and more. Dance tells stories without using words, so we'll explore some of the pantomime movement and encourage students to create their own story. We'll prompt statue game is a fun way to explore telling stories through shapes, and prepare students to make a dance -or 10 - all on their own or with their families. Taught by Erin Crall

MUSIC

SING ALONG WITH MODE MUSIC (K-2)

In our introductory class for young musicians, we will sing songs, explore instruments and have fun with music! All levels are welcome, but we encourage students with little to no experience to get them comfortable in a music setting. Using the songs of Caspar Babypants, popular songs of yesterday and today, and campfire sing-alongs, we will discover rhythm, song structure, lyrics and melody. Each class will prompt a 15-30 min practice or sing-along activity.

SONGWRITING (Grades 2-5)

Mode wants to hear your songs! Through this program, we will guide the students in their own self expression in music, whether they want to write lyrics, melody or chord progressions. Our instructor will create short and long term songwriting goals for the student while building a lasting skill and gaining confidence to write their own. Popular songs will be broken down as examples and used to create original compositions they can bring home to show the whole family. Each class will prompt a 15-30 min writing or practice activity. VOCAL PERFORMANCE (2-8)

Mode Music presents our very own pop choir! In the tradition of school choirs, Mode’s Vocal Performance class gives students the choir experience with a popular music twist. Using popular music both new and old, students will learn breathing, melody, harmony and blending as well as song form in several different styles. Each class will prompt a 15-30 min practice and sing-along activity. Taught by Jeff Tapia

UKULELE FOR ALL! (2-8)

Come learn ukulele with us! Whether you’ve played before or have never picked one up, our group ukulele class gives students the opportunity to pick up an instrument that they can take with them anytime, anywhere. Basic knowledge of the instrument is introduced while learning to tune, strum, read tablature and read chord charts. Students will leave being able to pick out simple, familiar melodies and play a few 3 chord campfire songs. Each class will prompt a 15-30 min practice or play-along. Taught by Jeff Tapia

THE QUINN AND QUINCEY SHOW! (2-8)

Join Quinn and Quincey for six weeks of awesome general music lessons and stories. We will learn about opera, composers, different instruments from around the world, different styles of music, and all sorts of other fun things in a way that speaks to the younger audiences and will (hopefully!) make everyone laugh. Thirty minute videos transition to listening assignments (yes, the homework is to listen to awesome music), and students will come out of this course knowing more about the music world around them. ART

Intro to Crochet (1-5)

Venture into the world of visual arts with the new Intro to Crochet class! Students will learn the basics of the art of crochet through demonstrations and tutorials that introduce techniques, basic stitches, crochet lingo, and pattern reading. By the end of this six-week course, students will have the skills to create simple, useful home goods like coasters, cup sleeves, bookmarks, and more - the possibilities are endless! Each class will prompt a 15-30 min practice or activity. Taught by Jessie Selleck.
